Distribution

Middle reaches of Warashima River of the Abe River sysem, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Systematics

Kuang et al. (2018) used molecular markers to study the internal structure of the Suborder Gobioidei which contains within it eleven Families. They demonstrated that Milyeringidae is sister Family to a group of four  Families: Oxudercidae+Gobiidae+Butidae+ Eleotridae and is only disttantly related to four others: Odontobutidae, Rhyacichthyidae, Apogonidae and Kurtidae (samples from Thalasseleotridae and Trichonotidae were not availabe for analysis).

Conservation Status

TLO [DD 3.1 2019]

This species is currently only known from two streams in Japan. However, data on its distribution are largely lacking and it may be more widespread than currently known. Information on the population is also lacking. The current known localities are under threat from stream channelisation, water pollution and road construction. Further information is required to assess its extinction risk. Therefore, it is listed as Data Deficient.

This species has been recorded from one stream in Shizuoka Prefecture and a few juveniles of the species have also been found in a stream in the central part of Japan (Ministry of the Environment Japan 2015). Thus, this species is considered to have a very narrow distribution range. However, data on the distribution are still largely lacking and it may be more widespread than currently known.

Data from Watanabe et al. (2019)
